2018 Winter Olympics

Postby Hugh Urquhart » 27 Jan 2018 02:52

Just wondering if there are going to be any flights available for the winter Olympics to Pyeongchang, Korea.
They start on Feb 5/18 & end on Feb 25/18. I know I'm ready to do a couple of flights there & back. Any word?

Hi - although the idea is a very good one, and something we have done in past Olympics, I'm afraid it is quite an undertaking that requires a lot of planning and form/data entry to get this done right.

This is not to say that we could not take requests and enter special crew pass flights as requested (also dependent on workload). Either way, I do not see this as a full out event like we have done in past, not at least this time.

Also, remember you all have access to the Flight Kiosk, where you could simply choose your own flights to perform this way... since it reflects real world data I'm certain you can find r/w flights to cover it.

And, if you can put this in every qualifying flight comment when you PIREP, (without the quotes) "OLYMPICS2018", I could work it out whereby you would even earn a ribbon to show your participation toward the real world events. Kind of a "Pseudo Event", if you will. And even this would take some time for me to do after the event completes.

Tom ...
Just want to say thanks for taking an interest in my thoughts re the Olympics. I understand that everyone is busy & can only do so much. Appreciate all that AirSource has done & is doing for us "simmers". As I said before, this gives us purpose & reason to climb into our virtual cockpits!
I've done a bit of research for Olympic flights & this is what I've found. Pyeongchang is a county in north-east Korea, & the closest airport is in a city called Wonju (RKNW). I can find only one flight into this airport in Airsource's database. This originates from a city called Jeju in South Korea (RKPC). It is located on an Island south of the tip of South Korea. Flights to here originate from Taipei Taiwan (RCTP). There are 547 flights into Taipei in Airsource's database. Should be easy to get there from anywhere in the world.
My flights would look like this ...
CYVR
RCTP
RKPC
RKNW
Lots of flying, but that's why we are here

Great - just be sure to put "OLYMPICS2018" in your PIREP remarks. Also, no need to post flights in the forum unless you need any entered as a special crew pass. Thanks all!

I have issued all awards, please let me know if I missed anyone (just reply to this post). The tracking of the flights was a bit quirky due to expired crew passes so I lost some search history there.

Thanks for the award Tom. Appreciate you acknowledging the event.
I enjoyed the flights, especially since us Canadians did so well in the games. Go Canada , eh!!
