Very severe turbulence

Postby as099mw » 13 Apr 2007 23:02

Flight: CSA 051 KJFK-LKPR
Aircraft: A 310-300
Location: Deer Lake (New Foundland)
The flight encountered severe to extreme turbulence with airspeed instant variations from 280 to 190 kts and vice-versa, repeated sinks of more than 1000 ft at 500 ft per second. The event took about 15 minutes. A/P and A/T disengaged, aircraft flown manualy. No injuries, but the aircraft interior absolutely needs intense cleaning. Almost all on-board supplies of air freshener poured into aircondition. The worst minutes of all my AirSource career. And that's why I always keep the seat belt fastened (and tightened) during the whole (real world) flight...

Hi Martin,

Flight: ASHA N619US LEPA - KHST
Aircraft: B747-400F

I also encountered some strange weather behavior in this same area. I was at an altitude of FL360, and had a pretty consistent headwind of 80+ knots, when all of sudden, the winds ceased, and I watched the OAT rise to +10C. This caused the engines to roll back to a lower EPR, which reduced my airspeed dramatically. The stall shaker was rattling, the pitch of my aircraft was ever so increasing, and then another weather update arrived an returned everything to normal.
