Isaias projected to become hurricane as it nears Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. —
Tropical Storm Isaias is now forecast to become a hurricane as it skirts the east coast of Florida this weekend.
Tropical Storm Isaias was centered about 95 miles northwest of Great Inagua Island, Dominican Republic Thursday evening. It had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was moving northwest at 20 mph.
Isaias is forecast to near Florida over the weekend and could strengthen to a category one hurricane. The forecast cone shifted east on Thursday afternoon and shows the storm passing the east side of Florida and moving toward the Carolinas.
Based on the official track from the National Hurricane Center, Central Florida can expect mostly beach impacts. Rough surf, rip currents, beach erosion- and a few gusty downpours working through the area. The timeline for these impacts would be Sunday into Monday.
A tropical storm watch has been been issued for the east coast of Florida from Ocean Reef northward to Sebastian Inlet and Lake Okeechobee.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday advised Floridians against letting down their collective guard as the forecast “cone” shifted to the east. “If you read the morning's advisory from the National Hurricane Center, basically it said, ‘Look, we're going to need a little bit more time before we really get that track,’” DeSantis said during an appearance at Space Florida headquarters in Merritt Island.
