Boeing 727 50th anniversary RTW

Postby as099mw » 12 Jan 2013 17:40

1963-FEB-09 is the date of the B727-100 first flight.

Boeing arranged a global (not RTW) 727 tour in 1963. The event took place from August 25, 1963 till the end of October 1963 and is mentioned for example here and here (map).

The tour was rather long, thus I've tried to set up a shorter RTW route. It starts and ends at KPAE and is mostly based on the original destinations (sometimes in a different order) except the section RJTT - KPAE, which was added to simply complete the round.
As shown here, the RTW consists of 15 legs and takes about 50 flight hours.

727 models are avialable for FS9 and FSX as both freeware and payware.

Well, what do You think about something like an "AirSource B727 50th anniversary RTW" event?

I'm in!
I love that ole' bird!
I remember flying Braniff International Airways B722 as a non-rev. AH! The smell of burnt JP4 and oil brings back the memories of the good old days.

Sounds awesome, would be a great opportunity to get back to basic navigation techniques too.

Can anyone recommend a good payware 727 products?

I think that's a great idea! I'd love to take the 727 for a spin.
Will we be flying the one that D.B. jumped from?

Martin, sounds like a superb idea that clearly some of the team are keen to fly.

I have created a Bid category for you as an "unofficial", yet enjoyable, event. Please feel free to add the bid flights as you see fit.

Team, please note that you will receive the pilot pay and hours for these flights but there won't be a special logbook award.

ENJOY!

Mark

Thanks for posting this historic event Martin. I remember going down to the Cleveland Air Show back in the '60's where United had flown in one of the first Boeing 727s to promote their new jet service from Cleveland to Hawaii. They had stewardesses, whoops!, I meant flight attendants wearing Hawaiian flower leis and passing out fresh pineapple flown in from Hawaii.

Just trying to decide which livery to choose. I have almost all the old 727 liveries. Also found the following video of the first test flight by Boeing of the B727:

Thanks Martin for putting the time into this. Coincidentally I just purchased the Captsim B727 100 and 200 series models! :)

The video (the part showing how they'd been testing flutter damping) reminds me my (the only one) flight on board the 727 (JAT), some 30 years ago, a short hop LDZA - LYBE. There were severe thunderstorms in the Belgrade area. The descent consisted of three or four long steep dives, always beginning with turn into the narrow gap between clouds. It was a very colorfull spectacle with lots of green, blue, magenta and similar lights (lightnings). And with some turbulence, of course. I always tighten my belts as much as possible for both ascent and descent, thus had no problem to stay on my seat. But that time I had to sit firmly on my hands to keep my arms unhurt. My seat was close to the trailing edge of the wing. Our 727 was flying like a bird - flapping the wings. People around me were changing their skin colour like a chameleons, similarly to the outside lights - to white, green and so on... I really enjoyed this part of the flight, I believed they (at Boeing) had calulated it well :)

Btw: HJG offers a 727-100 in the Boeing livery.

I don't want to bore everyone with a bunch of videos, but this one is one on the actual restoration being done on the first Boeing 727 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Washington. Lots of historical information on this great aircraft.
