20th Anniversary RTW Event

Postby AS129 - Michael » 31 Dec 2021 22:42

As we close in on the end of 2021 and celebrate the New Year, I realized that 2022 would the 20th anniversary of our first Around the World (RTW) event, first done in 2002. Since then, we've had a 2005 RTW event and the 2012 Journey Around the Americas (JATA2012).

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of our first RTW event, I would like to begin working on a special RTW2022 event for our members.

Just wanted to see if there would be some interest in this...... reply below!

Depends, will we have until the next Home for the Holidays event to complete this lol? I would love to do this but work might have different choices for me :)

We might have a concurrent event for a while but I don't think that would be a problem, many here like events!

I think I am going to streamline the event somewhat and cut back the number of legs. 72 legs is a bit much so I want to fit it so we don't interfere with the 2022 HFTH event. I also do not want to put a limit on the type of aircraft you can fly this event with. Me personally, I'm flying the same Convair 580 I have in the past.

More info as I start researching/planning this all out.

Okie dokie friends! I have come up with a very nice 40 leg adventure for this 20th anniversary RTW journey. It should be pretty scenic and a little challenging as well as I have included a couple of world renowned challenging airports for us to travel to.

As always, we traditionally start our trip from Sawyer International Airport (formerly KI Sawyer AFB) in the Upper Peninsula of my home state of Michigan. Heading Southeast we'll swing by Niagara Falls and then head up Northeast through Boston and eastern Canada. Crossing the Atlantic we'll cover Greenland, Iceland and into Norway where one of our legs will take us up the western coastline for a glacier and fjord sightseeing tour.

Tracking South from Norway we will transit western Russia with a stop in Saint Petersburg and the head to Austria, Spain and Portugal. Crossing North Africa we will take a southern turn to head either down the River Nile or you can hug the coast of the Red Sea. Then we will track Northeast into Oman and continue to the East across India and South of the Himalayas for some breathtaking views of the worlds tallest mountains.

Heading South we'll pay a visit to Myanmar, stop over in Thailand and make a stop in Indonesia. Transecting Australia and stopping at Ayers Rock, we'll then head East into New Zealand. Make sure your iPad is loaded with movies as we cross a lot of lonely ocean and tour some of the most remote islands of the South Pacific and make our way back North and into Japan.

The final push of our journey will take us up and across the Aleutian island chain in Alaska, into Canada and the back into the continental United States with a stop at Mount Rushmore and finally completing our 37,350 (give or take depending on how you fly it) mile trip around the world back at Sawyer International.

That's it for now. I'll post the official route once I finalize it and figure out a start date.

Cheers!

Great event so far Michael :) Can you, or Tom add more CP's to Leg 11... there is only one available instead of the usual 10. Thanks :)

Glad you're enjoying. Between you and Alan, you guys are rocking this event. Alan's already completed 75% of the trip as of today. I'm just starting leg #6.....

I've been using my CaptSim C130 which has been languishing too long in the hangar. It's a good aircraft to fly because you have to know startup/shutdown procedure rather than hit CTL-E ! lol
