Tip: Monitoring Real World Oceanic ARTCC

Postby race_munchies » 28 Aug 2016 03:09

I know I know "I listen to Live ATC it's great."

How about if you could listen to more Oceanic ARTCC sectors that Live ATC is not offering? I have no idea why but my guess would be that not many own a shortwave radio with single side band mode reception. This post is for those who WANT to listen to ARTCC LiveATC doesn't have.

There is a thing called WEBSDR. What is it? It's a software driven radio that streams real radio waves to the computer then the computer deciphers it into audio humans can understand. More or less DSP signal processing. I won't get to deep into it. It isn't real cpu intensive, in fact an android and iphone can stream it well.

First of all a list of websdr's globally
http://websdr.org/
Pick the one you want

The most popular one:
http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/?tune=341300usb (set to Shanon Volmet Weather)
http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/?tune=545000usb (set to G RAF Volmet Weather)
http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/?tune=559800usb (set to Caribbean and Santa Maria N.A.T. zones) Transoceanic clearance communications. Just a few to get you started.

System Requirements: A browser with HTML5 compatibility and/or latest Java. If you don't have Java installed run Firefox or Google Chrome. I have no idea how Microsoft Edge and IE10/11 does on WEBSDR

Websdr's are completely tune-able with your mouse. It's just the cheapest way to monitor Oceanic ARTCC's outside the reach of LiveATC. I recommend running it on a separate device other than your flightsim pc. It's free. For Pacific ARTCC's you need to select another wide band websdr on that side of the globe because Utwente websdr is in Netherlands and cannot receive PACOT's

Now that you know where to listen to Oceanic ARTCC's. Here is a list you can use to tune a websdr to

It's comprehensive. Plenty of aeronautical frequencies to choose from.

If you remember seeing an extra radio in the center pedestal of an Boeing Jetliner ie 747-400, usually at the right rear, these are the same frequencies those extra radios operate. Their VHF/UHF radio's wont work on big pond flights. Thats' how they communicate so well over the big ponds. Shortwave skips for hundreds of miles.

Side note: VATSIM tunes to a VHF frequency because FS2004/FSX doesn't have the shortwave band. It has the long wave band where ADF frequencies are. I cannot speak for P3D. I never ran it.

If any questions please don't hesitate to ask. :D
