Whats happened to the maps?

Postby paul01942 » 21 Oct 2018 16:46

Hi whenever I fly a flight using Active Air-source, and look at the map a white box appears asking "Do you own this website?" then within the white box it says "This page can't load Google maps correctly"

It also says all across the map numerous lines "For development purposes only"

any ideas anybody

It's a Google thing. In the long run, they are looking for money for their map service  It's just something we are going to have to deal with for now.

Apparently, they allow up to 25,000 map views a day (we use Web Maps Javascript API). Problem is, they want a credit card to keep "on file" and I'm not doing that. If anyone wants to offer up and provide me the key, I'll update the maps to use that key. And from what I understand, the view limit can be capped at 100,000 per day so if per chance somehow we went through the limit, it would not charge any money and would display the maps like we have now until the next day...

Ok, I stand corrected, sort of. Misunderstood what you said in the email.

Nope sorry I put a bad link above, that was OLD pricing - ughh! (why they don't just redirect I don't know! but there's a link at the top for "New pricing", it is actually 28,000 map loads per MONTH. The key gets a $200 credit per month to cover up to those 28,000 map loads. That's not really that many map loads if you think about it, we have 3 dynamic map pages, and based on 31 day month that's roughly 300 map loads per day / per map. I suppose it's better than zero!

Dynamic Maps in table on following page:

If anyone is interested, e-mail me.

I certainly wouldn't say that there aren't other options...but for the amount of work/coding that goes into the maps we currently have, it makes things much easier to use what we already have established...I couldn't tell you how many hours of testing it took to create what is there now. Part of that is my somewhat novice programming ability, but there are some pretty unique label/pop up features that you don't see in many other maps that are utilized here. Oh and the maps I remember from long ago were home-made (literally) running on John McCormack's home pc; and unfortunately those maps would be archaic today (no zoom, no moving the map around, fixed labels, etc.). It was a pretty cool setup he had, but it would create/write the gif image and upload it to the server every 30 minutes or something like that - Would be good for a museum :)
